Well it wouldn't be a New Year without me disagreeing with Platt eventually... I'd say that intellectual patterns can be just as "beautiful" as any thing else. Why would The Buddha not rest as comfortably in mathematical equations as it does in a symphony or painting? "Intellect" does not pollute beauty, it can either "channel" it (act "artistically") or turn its back on it (act "non-artistically"), same as any of the other "levels", or aspects of human activity.
