Hey Steve,

The significance of atheistic slaughter of innocents by the millions is to 
caution those who trash religious believers that nonbelievers are equally 
if not more capable of barbaric behavior. It's a reminder that being a 
atheist doesn't bestow on you any intellectual or moral superiority as 
some would like to believe.
