hi ham,
thankyou for taking the time.
i enjoyed reading about your path - helps me to see you more.
i too started out with a biology and chem degree!
pirsig too of course! (cue spooky music)

please do not take offense at my impassioned comments. i am not taking the piss
out of the intellectual foundations of the USA - quite the opposite. i am
lamenting the reality of the situation that undermines that declaration.

change is the only constant and we know we have to respond to the undermining
of what we hold dear - what we value. that is why we read pirsig, dug it and
are here now - nutting out the best way forward, together.

we can't just return to the old patterns, nor should we ignore them. rather we
need to creatively evolve these ideas in light of the present situation which
is much different to what it was 300 years ago.

countries like the USA, canada, australia and new zealand are still, in my
opinion, the great hopes of the world. they are the world in microcosm - having
welcomed all and sundry. they are the new world, but this new world has been
built on the indigenous world and until this indigenous knowledge is
respectfully integrated all our new lands will founder and remain in a cloud of
unknowing.

this is the reason why avatar is the highest grossing film of all time - it
taps into this basic recognition. the simple point is that the indigenous
worldview is actually more sophisticated and coherent (intellectually *and*
socially) than the naive scientific models of the west.

hegel is not my fave philosopher but he certainly was onto something with his
'thesis, antithesis, synthesis' idea. marrying the indigenous wisdom with the
often oppositional wisdom of the west is necessary to produce something greater
than both which will enable us all to live freely and in harmony with each
other and the planet.
