Platt wonders,
> Platt > Without the concept of real estate ownership protected by law what's to > prevent my gang from coming into your "space" and kicking you out? > John: It's an interesting question I've considered much. I think Real Estate is one of the most important metaphysical concepts we've got, and we don't question it much. We go on and on about "self" and "mind" and "other" and all kinds of stuff, but what about our dirt? The dirt we stand on? When did it become an abstract object of capitalism - to be converted into financial instruments? We are a territorial animal. All hell broke loose when a society of territorial animals evolving complex social forms to designate land ownership suddenly found themselves a whole continent of people who had the "my gang controls my territory" school of thought and they all got kicked out because europeans had a bigger gang and better weapons. For a practical place to start in the now, I'd say along the lines of a mining or lumber lease which contained agreements about proper land use and was set up for renewal at 10 year intervals. There would be a lot to this, I know. But there's a lot of brain power being wasted that could figure out a sensible solution that increased the productivity of the unused lands, and offered the young hope for bringing up their families on virgin soil. > I say raising cattle takes a hell of lot more land than raising a crop of > radishes. If you want to go down that road, all I can say is I hope you're well armed. Me, I'm willing to make adjustments slowly, but the way things are going we're not going to have the luxury of time so I wouldn't be surprised if what you predict does come about. This tea party thing is an interesting development that could very well go to far. dmb's worst fears, taking shape and I agree with him that its an ugly shape and doesn't portend for a happy resolution. World History has gone down some pretty dark paths in the recent past, it's not unthinkable that we're nearing such a precipice again.
