John (rudely and childishly) said to dmb:
...That's the attitude I'm talking about, but Kuklick's secular friends, and
evidently you too Dave, just can't get over anything that smacks of theism and
so the subject is closed. ..This closed-mindedness is what I find
objectionable. The issue of God is a non-issue to me. I don't care what you
choose to believe or what I choose to believe. It can change any moment
anyway. But I do appreciate those who can analyze intellectually without
letting their prejudice get in the way. Who are able to read omnivorously and
take what is good without prejudice.
dmb says:
Well, apparently the definition of "prejudice" and "closed-mindedness" has been
changed to mean "perspectives John doesn't like".
May I remind you that I've been paying tuition for the last several years. In
return they make me learn new things, unsettling, deep things. And then they
test my ability to conduct a critical analysis in various ways. Religion is one
of the things I'm most interested in, actually. It was the main topic in a
third of my courses and it'll play a central role in my thesis I'v just
started, so I'm still learning more about even as we speak.
Just because I have an opinion doesn't mean the subject is closed. Like
everybody else, my views on this topic are shaped by a lifetime of experience
and, like a lot of people, they're also shaped by my interest in it and the
deliberate effort to find out about it. Unless you're a kid, which I'm not, all
that adds up to a pretty massive thing that's not going to flip over at a
touch. It's not really even a matter of whether or not I'm WILLING to consider
theism as a serious option. All I can do is be open to those ideas on the topic
that makes sense, given my present understanding.
But nobody is so open-minded that they'll switch their whole worldview just
because some guy on the internet doesn't like it. It takes serious drugs to do
that.
