I had heard that the proof, at Fermilab, for the top quark came from six of six million trials. I also heard that the existence of the Higgs boson was hypothesized because of the appearance of unwanted zeros in certain calculations.. It is not comforting be at the mercy of such hearsay, but at the same time I can sense the excitement.
While I like the excitement, I am very skeptical (rightfully) because I've also been exposed to lectures, interviews and articles on the 'science wars' of the 1990's. Add to this how horrifying it is to hear that the calculation for top spin is not just mathematics but something "real". Real? In what sense real? "real" = in science proof of existence. the quarks are proven, first , by prediction, then by calculation,and after this , by observation,.once this path is complete at Fermilab or lhc(cern), then science knows , "real", It does not end here , however, the path does not cover the complete behaviour of the partikle. It covers the existence.and in a mnor way , the behaviour. Higgs,;the boson, as in "the god partikle". Predicted to be the partikle giving all objects and other partikles their mass. therefore it is often referred as the god partikle. But , it is now only a theory, it is a prediction, they assume it to be there. "Boson" it needs to be a boson, only then it can fit in the existing mathematical models. Problem with the higgs model is this, nobody is able to tell how and where a higgs boson will manifest itself as an appearance(event) at a surtain moent in time and space , IF it exists!!. This is where the european large hadron collider steps in. The lhc is so to speak on the lookout to find the very sharp physikal boundarys-(upper and under boundary), to set the possible parameters, to view the higgs bosonevent possibylity . So to speak, trying to view , first , how big or how small the higgs "field" is. So it is better to speak , for now ,about the higgs field. You can google higgs field , and set to pictures, this will generate nicely displayed higgs field predictions. six of six million trails , well, most of the results(events) are invalid because of contamination, in any form, mostly cosmic radiation.
