Steve's answer is the clue - fashion, 10 second attention spans, 15
minutes of fame, etc.

It's a memetic problem.
The ideas which spread are not the good ones, just the ones that are
easiest to spread.
And the ones that are easiest to spread are those than can be
communicated in the current (SOMist) paradigm.

An idea which requires effort to change your world view is very hard
to pass on to another, without a good deal of effort and trust on both
sides. A simplistic metaphor which fits all existing prejudices -
spreads like wildfire, to use your own metaphor. (Just look a
wikileaks, etc.)

Forget ideas, focus on actions.
