Ham to Steve, Dan, DMB, and All --

Sooner or later the patterned illusion that Pirsig refers to as one's
"perception" or "experience" must give way to the autonomous 'I' that knows
itself, its values, and the reality it experiences.

Andre:
So what you are saying Ham is: the twenty-first century American culture
exists, I live in and am part of that culture, therefore I think and act upon
those thoughts and therefore I am.

Ham:
Doesn't "one's behavior" imply an agent or self? And if the "question of freedom is
about you and your life," how is that life identified other than as a proprietary 'self',
'subject', or 'free agent'?

Only by acknowledging the free self can the MoQ survive as a viable and
comprehensible philosophy.

Andre:
To the extent that your behaviour is controlled by these static patterns of
quality it is without choice. But to the extent that you follow Dynamic
Quality, which is indefinable, your behaviour is free.

Ham:
On behalf of individual freedom and personal responsibility,

Andre:
Amen.
