I'm glad you say:"It's just that causal determinism is the most common among today's 
philosophers and scientists (like Parfit and Harris) and that's the kind involved in 
Pirsig's description of the classic dilemma"... as that was what waved the red flag 
for me when Steve attributed causality as being involved with the placing of the 
paintbrush on the canvas....so I twigged the SOM overtones.
