Given the Top Ten, I'm actually quite surprised about the kind of overlap the Reader's List has with the Board's List. The Great Gatsby is quite readable, and of excellent "literary merit" (whatever that is: we might just say, what Joyce and Fitzgerald have and Rand and Hubbard don't), but Ulysses at #11? The voters must split quite distinctly into schizophrenic demographic categories to get that kind of list. (Have you tried to read Ulysses or Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!? Whatever we might say about the critic's authority to tell people what has literary merit, those are -not- the kinds of books you'd normally find alongside Tolkien or Douglas Adams.)
