And now for a pithy commentary on biological quality. This being the eve of
May Day, this memory comes to mind. In a graduate school seminar some five
decades ago our professor shared with us this charming anecdote about the
"glory days" of the University of Chicago in the 1930's. I wonder if Dr.
Pirsig might have heard of it when he was there. It may be one of those
tales that are the stuff of urban legend, but it was told in my class as
historical fact.
It seems that one fine spring morning in the mid-1930's the
students and faculty of the venerable U of C awoke to find their campus
littered, as though by new-fallen snow, with small strips of white paper on
which were inscribed a profound couplet:
Hooray, hooray! The first of May!
Outdoor fucking begins today!
A hearty good wish for a joyous May Day to all, however you may choose to
celebrate it!
