Hello,
My questions regarding Rory's essay seem to have gotten lost in the emotional
responses by Bob and Carmen. I didn't mean to re-ignite an ideological feudwell,
maybe on a sub-conscious level I did (bad Bill, bad Bill!). For the record, I think
IQ tests and socialism are both social/intellectual tools that have some value, but
also some very clear limitations.
I was mainly interested in testing my notion that the MOQ would support "a wider
spread" of scholarships among different types of students. Affirmative action--be it
with public or private funds--
is in my mind a given. Listen, I'm in favor of "an all-volunteer army" for National
Defense (of which welfare programs are a logical sub-category). Still, there are
times when "we the people" find ourselves in a position of having to draft soldiers
for a particular war. There's a logical formula for all of this but emotion clouds
the discovery of it. Part of that formula is a logical basis for deciding just how
any available funds are to be spread around.
As for IQ tests and biological examinations--and scientific attempts at transferring
that data properly to social science.well, that's all pretty sketchy in my mind.
Just what are human beings evolving to? Large brained math whiz' or basketball
players who can shoot 80% from the field (or loving souls such as Mother Teresa)? I
think if we can get a handle on some of the larger questions first, then, just when
and how we tax people (and for what) will be easily answered logically.
Bill
