In ZMM, Phaedrus was upset that classic/romantic had split Quality itself. He went on to make it very clear that nothing splits Quality, in fact it is Quality which creates, and which is, everything. Classic and romantic Quality were explained as simply different TIME aspects of Quality - short and long, the track and the boxcars, pre-intellectual and conceptualized. In Lila, Pirsig splits Quality into Dynamic and static. The attributes of classic/romantic are very nearly directly transposed into these two new terms. The time aspect remains, re: DQ = pre-intellectual, and sq arrives "in it's wake". Romantic Quality, or Human Understanding was described as the "ability to see Quality before it's been all chopped up into words". Hence the undefinability of DQ, and it's association with mysticism. DQ goes beyond merely "the surface appearance/beauty of the world". A difference is in the example of the song on the radio. That DQ is understood as "betterness", as in the selections made by those fittest to survive. The best. My question is this. Are Dynamic Quality and static patterns of value metaphysically distinct? That is, do they split Quality itself? One point is that DQ is heavily associated with "Pure" Quality, often no distinction seems possible. This is when the question of the "illusory" existence of the external world comes up. Any thoughts?
