Hi Mary, squad ... >After taking a month off from the Squad, I've returned to find - chaos! >This is great! I love it! This is the big confusion. Chaos seems to be the antithesis of quality. Pirsig places it at the lowest level of morality (below his inorganic level). But I believe that Pirsig's writing tends to confuse chaos and DQ. Chaos implies lack of meaning. Mary's "love it" implies that she is willing to look for meaning to end the chaos. Go for it Mary - I personally am close to giving up! Mary also brings up:- >#1 Affirmative Action has come up here lately. ... I'm going to come straight out and say that my own view is that the MoQ may well support affirmative action! Remember all my past ramblings about "Potential" and "Realization". I always use "Potential" in analogy to its strict scientific meaning of potential energy. Water has the potential to siphon out of a sink, first running up to the edge (against potential), and then down (with potential) to the floor. The overall potential change favours the downward flow, but that siphon won't start on its own. It first has to be primed. Affirmative action stems from a belief that some groups are excluded from certain activities because of historic discrimination rather than inherent inferiority. The inequality of the situation has a potential to change, but won't do so spontaneously. It needs to be primed. Reverse discrimination is a priming step. It is valid if the reverse discrimination is a temporary step which leads to an improved situation. To put it another way, the ends justify the means.
