ROGER CONTINUES TO SUGGESTS THAT MEMBERS ARE
PROVIDING ONE DIMENSIONAL INTERPRETATIONS
TO MULTI DIMENSIONAL TOPICS

Ben,

Welcome and thanks for the thorough history. I agree with most of what both
you and X have been saying. I would like to clarify something, though. My
concern is when members reduce the MOQ's "collection of patterns", into "a
pattern," or "a level". I believe that complex things or concepts or
whatever tend to be multi-dimensional. As we get away from purely natural
inorganic things, we are more often than not dealing with an entity that is
comprised of a multitude of patterns at multiple levels. RMP makes this
point when he discusses MAN and LILA and other examples through the book
(though I believe he does oversimplify for literary reasons in a few places
too). Each of these was defined on four....no five different levels. The
interwoven multiple dimensions and the conflicts within create the complex
nature of complex "things" (think Bill Clinton).

The point is that THE COMMON MAN and war and battles and cities and democracy
and fascism and LEADERSHIP and what-not are collections of patterns of
multiple levels. Oh sure, we can argue that a given thing is best defined as
essentially a social or an intellectual pattern, but to forget the multitude
of patterns that form complex parts of reality is to actually rob the MOQ of
much of its illuminating nature. As an example, I would probably define
LEADERSHIP as essentially a social pattern. Clearly though, it has
inorganic, biological, and intellectual and even some dynamic elements. We
could also argue that the leadership on one side was a higher level
intellectually than the other side.

But to say WWII is an intellectual war is an oversimplification.

Let me know your thoughts.

Roger

PS -- David B. ......we never finished the similar discussion from last
month. As you can see , I also unsimplified my explanation a bit. Please
jump in if you want to continue.
