Strictly speaking, there's nothing in the MD Rules or Charter which
says that members must accurately quote other members when
replying or engaging in dialogue. I also think it would be pointless to
introduce such a rule as some members seem to have difficulty
complying with the few simple and easy to follow rules that do exist -
even though they are normally posted every month. Introducing an
'honest and integrity' rule would probably only invite further
accusations of my draconian behaviour and attitude - like I give a
stuff - and enforcing a rule like this would be nigh on impossible
without making the MD a moderated list (you can guess what the
response to that would be) which I would not do.

However, my opinion is that apart from being a futile and pointless
exercise it is extremely poor (n)etiquette and pathetically dishonest
to _deliberately_ misrepresent another persons point of view in what
is supposed to be a meaningful and worthwhile discussion forum. I
would emphasise 'deliberately' here as, in many cases of apparent
misrepresentation it is often the case that it is either a genuine error,
a misunderstanding or a general cock-up, any one of which we are all
subject to from time to time, where no harm is intended and
generally none done.

The best we can do is to trust to each members desire for high
quality dialogue, which considering the subject matter should be a
foregone conclusion. When this fails, as it has done in the past with
some members who are, fortunately, no longer with us, it should not
be tolerated or allowed to go unmentioned.

I await David's response to your post.
