Anders & Other social creatures,

You asked,

> BUT Biological develops into intellectual and that creates social. Can it be any
>other way ??

After reading the following from the Principia Cybernetica website a while
back and finding similar breakdowns other places I agree with you that
Pirsig's breakdown is not quite right.

> 1.Prebiotic: the developments taking place before the origin of the life, i.e.the
>emergence of physico-chemical complexity: the Big Bang, space and time, energy and
>particles, atoms and the different elements, molecules up to
> organic polymers,simple dissipative structures.
>
> 2.Biological: the origin of life and the further development of the
> specifically biological aspects of it: DNA, reproduction, autopoiesis,
> prokaryotes vs.eukaryotes, multicellularity, sexual reproduction, the species.
>
> 3.Cognitive: the origin of mind, i.e. the basic cybernetic, cognitive
> organization, going from simple reflexes to complex nervous systems, learning, and
>thought.
>
> 4.Social: the development of social systems and culture: communication,
> cooperation, moral systems, memes

And then to this we could add the fifth level Intellect which might be
something like Popper's "objectivist epistmology or knowledge":

5 Intellect: knowledge or thought in an objective sense, consisting of
problems, theories, and arguments as such. Knowledge in this objective sense
is totally independent of anybody's claim to know; it is also independent of
anybody's belief, or disposition to assent; or to assert, or to act.

Although "objective" is a bad word under the MoQ, I think in this sense it is
compatible with MoQ's premise that intellectual patterns of value can have a
degree of autonomy from all subjects and are a high level of reality in and of
themselves. Have a life of their own if you will. The patterns of value that
are the novels (ZZAM and Lila),when they were stored on a hard drive, were
intellectual patterns and as such very real. Who can argue that those same
pieces and parts floating around in Pirsig's brain were not as "objectively
real" in a similar sense?
