Hello, i am new to the MoQ discuss group, but would really like to explore the parallels and differences between Mr. Pirsig's thought and that of Michael Polanyi. I think that specifically Polanyi details the ideas of tradition and submission to authority much more thoroughly than does Pirsig. This fact is somewhat surprising since Polanyi makes no mention of Zen Buddhism, which seems to be an abundant well-spring for propogating tradition and submission to authority. Polanyi uses the vehicle of philosophy of science to make his points whereas Pirsig uses fiction, this could be the reason for the difference in this area. I see these ideas of tradition and authority structure as the necessary epistemic conclusion to Pirsig's Zen-based metaphysic. Does anyone have any ideas or comments on this issue? Thank you, jeremy.
