As Pirsig says in Lila, the intellectual level gained precedent over the 
other levels in the early 1900s. Humanity now has the necessary BRAINS to 
start making the changes we need in order to improve our value systems. 
That's what makes our complacency all the more evil; so many of us are smart 
enough to see the deep problems of the world, but we *choose* to do nothing. 
"We didn't know any better" is a lousy excuse in a world overflowing with 
smart people.
