Doubts? Scepticism? Who... Me? :)
There are several reasons for bringing up the free will issue that bear directly on
the other
subjects I've been discussing. I'm also averse to making assumptions about basic
aspects
of the MoQ without at least trying to provide some basis for those assumptions.
It's reasonable to state that Free Will (in some form) is an essential component of
the moral
process and acting in accordance with DQ but how does the MoQ accomodate it and in
what form.
I don't believe in absolute free will (or absolute anything else for that matter) so
it is the
degree to which we are capable of exercising choice/free will and those contexts where
it is
appropriate that interest me, because in any worthwhile ethical system (or any ethical
system supported by a particular metaphysics) the degree to which we can choose is
synonymous with our status as moral agents.
Pirsig's references to free will are less than clear and, as with other aspects of the
MoQ, if
we don't get at least a reasonable clarification of how the MoQ deals with it then it
will have a
knock on effect at a later date - so it seemsreasonable to try and clear it up now, if
possible.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!
