Hi Horse,
Thanks for your response to my questions. I fear were beginning to talk past
each other. That is not to say that I think youre wrong. Its just that Im not
familiar with Capras Web of Life and perhaps other authors who have
influenced your approach to the MoQ. By participative universe I assumed
you meant quantum physics where the presence of an observer participates
to create reality. And when I attributed to you a scientific view of reality I
meant the same-that at least one quantum view holds that our participation
as observers creates reality not the rigid physical laws of matter.
Nor did I make it clear that my questions about science were in no way
intended to belittle the important role of science in improving the quality of
life. I agree that if it wasnt for science, wed still be in the Dark Ages.
As for bottom-up or top-down morality, the most obvious case of top-down
morality in the MoQ is the Giant of the social level who use human parts for
its own moral purposes. And without the moral force of Dynamic Quality
there wouldnt be any wholes/parts, relationships, levels or anything else. In
the sense that the creator is prior to and above that which it creates, the
MoQ can be seen as supporting a top-down moral order. Whats surprising
to me is that you appear to favor the bottom-up approach while at the same
time supporting an anti-reductionism, holistic approach. I see those positions
as incompatible. But again, Im probably misinterpreting your meanings.
So my next step is to read Capras book. Then hopefully Ill be better able to
contribute more knowledgeably to our discussions.
