Hello,

David B; you asked me a while ago to discuss the self in reference to the
moq. I agree, per usual, with your recent clear assessments of Pirsig's
philosophy of, let's say, "self AND selfless" - ness. I've picked up
Wilber's "brief history" and am loving it - his thought really complements
P's.

I like this idea: that each human IS ("has" implies autonomous
SOM-subject/soul) 4 centers of value, or energy, or consciousness, or
whatchamacallit, and that each of these centers are experienced and
expressed as an individual "self" - and rightly so, because they each have
different sets of values.

Wilber's concept of every thing/event being a "holon" - meaning it both has
parts and is a part, it is a whole and is part of other wholes - is
extremely relevant/influential here. Especially the idea that, "within" the
holon, the different levels of consciousness, which are centers of
"valuenergy" (for lack of existing appropriate words) can... well, "fight",
so to speak. Be in conflict, OR attain a harmonious co-existence through
transcendence by inclusion and expansion.

So - when you say:

>In a certain sense, mysticism is about losing your self. But you've got to
>first have a self to lose!

I am ecstatic at the clarily thus provided. Thanks.

Gotta run. More - much more - later.

Rich
