David and Roger: OK, I'm busted. It's just about impossible to take "Be a
man" as anything other than personal. BUT, the idea is that my comments
aren't JUST hurtful. I'm really trying to convey something meaningful and
sometimes pain results. Its not the intention, its a side effect. Its not
that I'm sadistic, but sometimes genuine communication requires
confrontation and criticism. And it seems to me that being nice just isn't
very important compared to the integrity of ideas. I refuse to let the
spirit of Miss Manners dictate the rules of philosophical exchange. Thanks
all I'm saying when I say suck it up and be a philosopher. I think the sting
of criticism is just part of the process, its unavoidable.
But I do promise to try and be nicer about it.
And I really do appreciate David L's efforts to keep the peace. Thanks.
