Haven't had much time to read the postings lately, but skimming thru them two
points of interest occured to me:
1. Struan: As I said, I haven't been very diligent with the post reading,
but I seem to have missed the basis of your premise that subject/object
distinction is primarily, if not exclusively, within the domain of human
psychological analysis and not the basis for a metaphysics? Couldn't it be
argued somehow that the subject/object distinction is a fundamental quality
of the nature of reality, hence making it well within the domain of any
would-be metaphysics? If you have touched on this, can you show me the
posting, or perhaps give it to me in a nutshell?
2. 2+2=5: While loosely following all the arithmetic analogies being thrown
around, a point occured to me, one that may have been touched on already.
Anyone familiar with Orwell's "1984" will know that the main character,
Winston, was eventually forced to accept the supremacy of the Party under
torture conditions. One of his points of "salvation" in the eyes of the
torturer was that he was forced to accept that 2+2=5 is an entirely true
statement if that's what the Party maintained. Horrible torture forced him
to see this eventually, and not just accept it, but really see 5 fingers as
his torturer was holding up four. Although a fictional account, I think it
can be taken as a very real lesson in the fragility of human reality. In any
event, is this in any way an important point while discussing the value or
lack thereof or futility in discussing of a statement like 2+2=4? It seems
to me that to Winston 2+2=5 was an answer of extremely high Biological (is
that correct Pirsigese?) quality and, given the nature of this example,
extremely high Social quality as well. Anyway, a grain of salt to anyone
interested.
