Arlo, If you think bottled water is bad wait until you have to buy bottled air. I remember when it was a measure for our distain for foreign countries that you had to drink bottled water to avoid getting the trots while traveling. The idea that one human being would sell another human being water was morally unthinkable.
But you have crossed the line with your slight on minivans. I love my minivan. It is a bit of a leftover from when we were hauling kids here and there but it is comfortable relatively fuel efficient and great for hauling stuff here and there. Image be damned. I already picked up the only chick I am concerned with impressing and I finally inherited the minivan from her... Motorcycles? Repealing helmet laws is a good way to thin the herd in my view. As a supplement to Dan's great suggestion on doing much of your own gardening, buy local organic produce. Support your local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm. Many operate on a pay-by-month basis, you get a box (usually) of great tasting, organic, healthy (because it was freshly picked and naturally ripened) produce, and you don't support the insane waste of flying produce from far away lands. Depending on where you live, of course, you may still need to buy your bananas at the grocery store, but even then consider buying organic (less toxic chemicals pumped into the environment and subsequently into your bloodstream). Eat locally and with the season as best as you can. It's better for you, if nothing else. Second, bottled water? Forgedaboudit. Buy a purifier or distiller for you home, and take your water to go. Every time you buy your Evian or Aquafina or whatever, think about all the gas that has burned (not to mention the plastics, even if you recycle!) getting that water to you. It may be from Fiji, but is it that worth the gas spent to get it here? (Arlo the Conservationalist adds... do you remember the glory days when you could drink out of springs and wells and creeks? I do. Consider something Dennis Miller said a few years ago (this is not an exact quote). "Water. Its the single most abundant resource on the planet. And we have to pay a dollar a bottle for it to be clean?" Something's amiss, folks. We've accepted the fact that in less than twenty years, the majority of our water has become so polluted that we can't even drink our TAP water without pungent tastes, let alone water from outdoor sources. Shheeesh.) Third, ahem... buy a motorcycle. Oh sure, modern-day liberal wimps love their hybrids, but my Harley gets on average between 50-60 miles per gallon. Plus instead of looking like a dweeb in an emasculating "sedan" or god-forbid "minivan", you can ride with your head held high and proud. Ladies, nothing is hotter than a woman who rides. (Arlo admits this last bit was unabashedly sexist). Its fun, its cool and it saves the environment. Want another incentive? Those pipes will bug the hell out of stuffy old conservatives. It's the perfect activity!!!
