[Marsha] In a monistic metaphysics there is only one substance. Once broken down into the many (SQ), your explanations makes sense. But there is no such division within Quality or DQ.
[Arlo] Quality *is* divided into static and Dynamic in Pirsig's metaphysics. Quality/Value/Betterness is primary. It exists before the SQ/DQ split. What we see as static patterns are the result of this immediate, primary Quality. Value is not secondary. It is the first thing. When Pirsig refers to "Dynamic Quality" as "Dynamic morality" this is just what he meant. When he writes of the brujo he is clear that DQ is Value/Betterness, "He was just following some vague sense of "betterness" that he couldn't have defined if he had wanted to." "When inorganic patterns of reality create life the Metaphysics of Quality postulates that they've done so because it's "better" and that this definition of "betterness" -this beginning response to Dynamic Quality-is an elementary unit of ethics upon which all right and wrong can be based." (LILA) You can disagree with Pirsig, and as such I don't think I can (or want to) try to change your mind. moq_discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
