[Kevin] I'm saying rationality can be a source of good or evil. The particular outcome depends on how its used. Nuclear energy has huge benefits. But nuclear waste is a deadly problem. And the development of the internal combustion engine a hundred years ago was an enormous boon to industrial economies. And so now we face the dangers of global warming because of our irresponsible burning of fossil fuels.
[Case] ...fillin the blank... can be used as a source of good or evil. [Kevin] But the greatest tragedy by far is the effect unbridled rationality has on human relationships and interpersonal communication. [Case] How in the world has rationality had tragic effects on human relationships? Are people better governed by emotions and the irrational? People behave better toward each other when they are reasonable than when they are swept away by emotion. This is the kind of thinking that sounds good in sound bites but doesn't really add up. [Kevin] Human relationships and interpersonal communication based solely on rationality aren't just dead they're...well, evil. Take Quality out of relationships and you loose love, happiness, compassion, trust, forgiveness, joy and sorrow. [Case] What sort of rational thinking holds that emotions can be ignored or are irrelevant? Of course these are important but personally and historically we can see the harmful effects of people ruled by their passions. In a great many of our interpersonal interaction rationality is simply irrelevant. Rational individuals recognize this. But when decisions must be made and plans developed who ya gonna call? moq_discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
