I am not sure if it is applicable to your data, but I use Fourier analysis to construct symmetric shapes in 2D. I obtain simultaneous numberical data for distances, corners, protuberances (relief) and uneveness (dispersion between nearby points). Perhaps this could help you or someone else.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Alex
