Dear Andrea,
For 3D landmarking from CT or MR data, I use a freeware program from NIH
called etdips (http://www.cc.nih.gov/cip/software/etdips/). This allows
extraction of surfaces, cut planes, and placement of 3D landmarks on
surfaces or orthogonal 2D images. Landmark coordinate data can be saved
as text files. There's no real software support, but I've been using it
for many years and would be happy to offer suggestions from my
experience with it.
Amira (http://www.visageimaging.com/products/amira.php) is an excellent
3D image package, allowing a lot of flexibility with image manipulation
(but a not-very-useful landmarking tool). The drawback is the expense
(around $3000, I think). I think a lot of other people on the list are
using this, too.
I'll be glad to share more suggestions, especially re medical imaging.
There is a lot of freeware available.
Best,
Valerie

Dear morphometricians,
I've been asked some information about software for 3D image analysis
(what's available, what kind of data can be analysed and what kind of
analyses are avaialable, range of prices etc.). This is in
preparation for
a short course on image analysis for graduate students that might be
organized in Milan the next year.
Except for that bit that has to do with geometric morphometrics, this
is
something on which I have no experience. I'd greatly appreciate your
advice
and suggestions.
Thanks a lot, in advance.
All the best
Andrea
