I have been considering this and related issues for a morphometric study of fern leaves from herbarium sheets. In my case, sampling is a bit more random, as people sampling flowering plants will often haphazardly grab ferns which happen to be in reach. Collectors are clearly favoring larger specimens, as informative characters are often absent from smaller specimens, which are actually more representative of the populations.
One of the controls I will be employing is an analysis of effects of the collector and the person who identified the specimen. This information will always be present. -Jonathan Krieger Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Campus Box 334 University of Colorado Boulder, CO 80309-0334 303.735.3135 (tel) 303.492.8699 (fax) email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~kriegej/
