(I'll get to the point quickly.) From what I've read, an extra set of 
simultaneous equations,

      Σw  = 0 .......... (1)
      Σwx = 0 .......... (2)
      Σwy = 0 .......... (3)
      (summing over w, x, and y, where appropriate)

are required to fully determine the system of equations that arise in 
the thin-plate spline problem.

My question is, where do these extra equations come from? Or are they 
just introduced to fully determine the system - in which case they have 
no physical meanings.
