Greetings, Morphmetters! As you know, morphmet is a moderated mailing list. As such, I approve each message before forwarding it to the list. Early on, it was decided that in doing so, I would delete mail header information to protect the email addresses of those submitting the message. Those who wanted their email addresses available would simply add them to their signature or the message, itself.
One result of this is that members who forget to add identifying information to their messages often become confusingly anonymous, e.g. "Could one of you 600 morphometricians tell me what I should do? Thanks, Bob" Who is Bob? How can I write him directly? Etc.? I propose that beginning in the coming new year I include the original mail header in the posting. The messages are all archived at www.mail-archive.com, but email addresses are hidden in that archive (see example below). So, only list members would see your email address. I think that with spam filters, anti-virus programs, and general user awareness, distributing email addresses on a small, professional list poses little risk even to MS Windows users. Let me know what you think. I will get a sense of the community's opinion before making a decision. However, this is not a democratic process. I will make the final decision based on a weighted consideration of the input I receive. E.g., if I get what I believe is a single compelling argument for not doing this, I will not proceed even if everyone else thinks its a good idea. Thanks, the morphmet moderator (dslice) PS: I probable won't post responses on the list unless I see some good reason to do so.
