That is often a problem. The easiest solution is to uncheck the folder options in Windows for "Hide the extensions of known file types". That way you can see the actual extension and hence easily change it.

It sounds like you are using Windows/Notepad, and it is hiding the extension
from you. If so, there will be a hidden .txt extension you cannot see, but will
throw off the program. -ds
