Dear Bernd,
semilandmarks are useful when there are no true homologous points to  
be used as landmarks, such as in curves. 
Brief introductory accounts on the use of semilandmarks are available  
in the Zelditch et al 2004 book and in Adams et al 2004 (Ital J Zool,  
freely available at  
http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/morph/review/review.html ). 
Please, note also that in recent years there's been a bit of  
discussion on the appropriateness of the use of semilandmarks and not  
everyone agrees on the issue.
