Hi Andrea,

I recently found out, how to elegantly edit a mesh in meshlab (besides
the selection of a rectangular region):
you can paint the areas you are interested (z-painting), and then do
->selection-> select faces by color and delete or do whatever you like
with it (delete or invert selection and delete the rest).

Blender is also very powerful (though not that user-friendly at the
beginning and slow with large meshes)
