Subject: Identifying Landmark points
To: morphmet@morphometrics.org

I am using 28 landmark points for a study on mandibles. The majority of them are common points such as Gonion, Mandibural notch, coronion and so on. However I have some points that I created myself for the purposes of my study.

Question: Can I make up names for these points. Is there a system to this. Is it possible the are not made up land mark points but I have been unable to find them in previous research. I'll Copy and paste the landmarks and definitions.

I made up the name for landmark 8,9 and 10. I have no names yet for 16 and 17.

Landmark

Definition

1. Gonion

Point along rounded posterioinferior corner of mandible where line bisecting angle between body and ramus would hit

2. Condylion mediale

Most medial point on mandibular condyle

3. Condylion laterale

Most lateral point on mandibular condyle

4. Mandibular notch

Most Inferior point on mandibular notch

5. Coronion

Most superior point on coronoid process

6. Posterior ramus

Point at posterior margin of ramus at level of M3

7. Anterior ramus

Point at anterior margin of ramus at level of M3

8. M3 Internal

Point on alveolar bone just posterior to midline of third molar on lingual side

9. M1 External

Point on alveolar bone just posterior to midline of first molar

10. M1 Internal

Point on alveolar bone just posterior to midline of first molar on lingual side

11. Mental Foramen

Point in middle of mental foramen

12. Gnathion

Most inferior midline point on symphysis

13. Gnathion Internal

Most inferior midline point on the lingual side of mandible

14. Infradental

Midline point at superior tip of septum between mandibular central incisors

15. Mandibular orale

Most superior midline point on lingual side of mandible between two central incisors

16. --

Midline Point on the lingual side of the mandible at the level of M2

17.--

Midline point on the symphysis midway between the infradental and the Gnathion
