which version of Rvcg did you use?
could you send me the file for debugging?
I have tested the function with a variety of textured files without
issues (at least no R crashes).
in case your file is not a png and/or split into multiple images, you
should get a message stating:

please convert texture images to png format
only single texture files supported, only first one stored

and if that is the case, when rendering with rgl you will get a warning:

Warning message:
In rgl.material(...) :
  RGL: Pixmap load: unable to open file 'Desktop/smilla1_0.png' for reading
