Hi! First of all, I'm thrilled that this list is back
up...thanks Ginger. Between Mosaic and RWT, I am
getting my school fix. I am on maternity leave until
January! LOVE my new little guy (though don't get me
started on nursing), but my brain needs this
stimulation!

I was laughing out loud when I read about the kids'
moving "connections." This same thing happened to me
the first time we did response journals, only it was
way worse because I have 3rd graders, and getting them
past summaries is painful and time consuming!! It
sounds like you have a good plan though, and your kids
will get there with your continued modeling...that's
what works the best. (which i'm sure you know:o)

One thing I also did was to have my kids keep 2 column
notes for a bit with one column for stickies "My
Connections" and the second "How this helps me
understand the character/story" Then I show them
how I take my notes to turn into a journal entry.
This worked well since I only require one journal
entry a week, but they work on notes for every
workshop. (Also gives me something to
collect/accountablity if I choose.) I learned that
most of my fall journal responses are definitely works
in progress (aka junk!) as the kids are learning to
think and journal in a deeper way. Most kids are not
used to this at all. Are your 5th graders exposed to
this before they get to you? It makes all the
difference! :o)As a matter of fact, the members of our
prof book club at school brought our kids' fall
journals and everyone was moaning about their
junk...grade didn't matter...we have teachers from
5th, 3rd and 4th...we all convinced each other to keep
modeling and stick it out, and then said we would
bring our journals back in the spring. What a
wonderful difference!! I think we just expect too
much too soon. (at least I do.)

Good luck and don't quit because they are junk...they
get so much better!! OK...very long...sorry. Can you
tell my main conversation is with a 2 month old and a
yellow lab?! Yikes.
