expected part of the process. It helps all involved to see the kids
thinking. Mosiac, Strategies that Work, Nancie Atwell (In the Middle),
Linda Rief (Seeking DIversity), Lucy Caulkins (The Art of Teaching Reading)
among many others, have fantastic explanations and examples of ways to write
about reading. Writing about reading NEVER takes away from the reading.

May I add Janet Angelillo, Writing about Reading. Great discussion of how to
use sticky notes to best advantage. My kids prepare for discussions with
them all the time, and where they wouldn't write much in a journal, the act
of writing it directly into the book, right where the idea hits them, really
gets their writing started. Sometimes the writing prompt is "Take one of
your sticky notes and write about it." Sometimes it's "Take one of your
partner's sticky notes and write about it."
