Thank you for your responses. To answer one question--The teacher is teaching
for 135 mins. However, the children only have 90 total minutes of reading.
The first 90 minute block of time is divided into two 45-minute periods. She
has 10 children for the first block--then they go to a special (art, music,
computer, etc.). The 10 children who went to specials first, return for the
second 45-minute block. After recess, they have 45 more minutes as a whole
group. Therefore, while she teaches 135 minutes, each child has 90.

We are trying to decide whether to continue this schedule, or move to a full
90 minute workshop with no interruptions. The disadvantage, of course, is that
she will have 20 students the entire time and it requires better management
skills. The advantage is that it is uninterrupted, and as Renee pointed out,
there is much more flexibility for how to use the time. I just wanted to get
the perspective of those of you who have experienced different scheduling
scenarios, so that we can make the best decision for the teachers and the
children.

  Thank you.
  Denise
