What about first doing a KWL type chart? Or some kind of chart  
provides you, the facilitator, with a form of preassessment.
Then, I like Dave's idea, but I'd try to find a short article and ask  
people to read, stop, and write down their thinking. I'd try to find  
something from the newspaper that is current and interesting to them.  
I find it's better to focus on one piece where they all have a common  
experience. Then, you can also compare how different readers with  
different backgrounds react to the reading.
