I agree w/everything Kristin said about emergent readers reading aloud, though not in round robin mode. I have observed this in our first grade classrooms. I even have (unfortunately)had emergent third grade readers whisper read b/c they are not ready for silent reading yet.
In my guided reading groups I do a couple of different things: 1. Move around the table and do a quick oral fluency check on the spot while they are silent reading. I just ask them to read a bit aloud of what they've just read or are going to read. 2. As someone else mentioned (Marsha?) have kids read aloud from the text they've read to answer questions or infer. Both work for me. I also agree w/what Joy said about individual conferences.
