I think so too. It really hit home when I began working with a group of third graders (mostly boys) this year on thinking strategies and I posed the question...." So why do you think it is important to learn about these strategies?", hoping to hear that they would get a deeper understanding of what they were reading and enjoy reading more as a result, but they were all in agreement that it was because they were going to be tested on them. They have no concept of reading for enjoyment. The school I work in is relatively affluent, too so it is not so much a socioeconomic issue. I guess I think that the testing is a big issue and it comes at a time when society is changing too.
