Also, I teach all subjects. We are self contained....so, I feel the math
teacher's pain.

Ok--you left us hanging--best prince? Princess? Please continue. I have
taught 3rd in Texas for a gazillion years (actually 19, 6 years in first, 2
in second and 1 in kindergarten) so maybe I can help. What district are you
in? Also the test is in February--so you do have 3 months left after that
for language arts fun. I try to limit practice now to one day a week TAKS
specific practice--usually guided mini-lesson than a passage with a partner
or small group. Then one passage on another day for a grade. Readers at
risk get title help on a daily basis--we have a new computer program called
Readabout that they really enjoy. Our grade level is doing ok in reading
after are TAKS release benchmarks all looks well, but math teachers are in a
panic because of ridiculously hard benchmark tests--worse than TAKS.

Ok, here it goes
I have been afraid to say it out loud (and if you knew me, that would be a
first). This is my first year to teach third grade. And in Texas, it's ( 3rd
up) all about the test, whether, anyone wants to admit it or not. I taught
first and second grade for 17 years and needed a TAKS grade to be considered
for an administration job (after I graduate with my masters degree this
coming fall). Now that I am in 3rd, I am always thinking about the test,
getting my kids on grade level to past the test, getting kids not on grade
level in resource, tutoring, tutoring, and more tutoring. The poor kids who
need tutoring are hit coming from all directions. Sort of like this wedding
coming up of my friend, she asked me to be in it 6 months ago. Did I began
dieting then to look good, oh NO... I am crash dieting now right before the
diet. That's how I feel. I DON'T enjoy teaching. I so want to have fun with
my kids, but, I am afraid to let go of all the strategies for the test. I
have the best princ

If you mention it to the literacy facilitator, do you think she will help
you
replace these maerials? Maybe she could also gently encourage the third
grade to
find new resources for next year (with her help!).
