I just read the responses to my questions about inferring and comprehension
issues with upper primary and they gave me some great ideas. Thanks, Rex and
others for being so specific. I have seen the books by Smith and Wilhelm and
will try to delve into them. I also loved Ginger's "magic formula" for
inferring. Last year was my first year in this district and I was doing some
activities much like this when my mentor questioned why the kids weren't
reading
more instead of looking at pictures. I tried to explain that it was "reading"
they were doing-reading into a pictorial representation of a feeling, event,
etc. I think no words on the page with a distinct picture makes one think even
harder. However, since I'm not tenured I do what I'm told...perhaps I will
slip some more pictures in when no one is looking!
thanks again- Michelle, 4/5 NY
