The first time I used this poem with my class, I had the kids draw the image that was in their mind as we read the poem. Regarding the part where it says their bills were tucked in their quills..one of my kids drew dollar bills sticking out of the ducks' feathers. Another student asked her why the ducks had money, she expalined her thinking and the other child explained that bill is another word for beak. The student really got a good laugh out of this but it lead to a great conversation about how your schema affects your visualizations. She was gracious enough to give me her drawing.
