Speaking of big books, I got a really good idea at the NCRA last spring. The
presenter took old bulletin board characters, shapes, etc, and mimicked popular
books by gluing them onto poster board or chart paper. She added words, and
laminated the whole thing. She punched holes in it, then "bound" the book with
rings.

She gives the students the pages apart. They can read a page at a time while
others are reading the other pages. Then she has them reassemble the book and
put it in order. (Her example was mimicking Brown Bear by Eric Carle, using an
old farm themed bulletin board.) It was VERY cute, and very durable. She gave
us more ideas of how to use the books, but off the top of my head I can't
remember what they were.
