I agree with Cami's reply about ways to work on rhyming (using rhyming songs, doing an oral cloze procedure, making a class book. How about using rhyming picture cards to reinforce this teaching? I like having the kids who need more work on rhyming work in pairs to match up rhyming picture cards, or play "concentration" with rhyming pairs picture cards. I will have, of course, modeled this for them (more than once) before turning them loose with it on their own! And I totally agree with what Kristin had to say about why kids have so much trouble with rhyming! These kids just need to be immersed in nursery rhymes, rhyming songs, etc. Are y'all finding that a good many of these students (who have trouble with rhyming) are ELL students? I know rhyming is not a common thing in some other languages, and if these students are not hearing rhyming English songs/poems etc. at home, that (obviously) doesn't help the students with learning to rhyme.
