In 4th and 7th grade the state does a essay along with the regular spring
testing. (California Standards Test=CST). We can have one of four genres,
and we don't know what genre until we actually sit down to take it. It can
be summary, response to literature, expository, or persuasive. We never see
the scores the kids get, as it is figured into our AYP.

In the high school, the kids take the CASEE ( California High School Exit
Examination). I know very little about it. I have never taught anywhere
near it, but I hear it's a bear, and kids need several attempts to pass it.
Many never do and don't graduate. Those who had finished the necessary high
school coursework but failed the exit exam, were able to participate in
graduation ceremonies last year, but received a certificate of completion
rather than a diploma. I don't know about this year.
