I read her book maybe 10 years ago but have recommended it to secondary
English teachers since many times. Linda has a classroom in which reading
and writing workshop approaches are central. But she explained that unlike
Nancy Atwell - she didn't get two periods a day to teach literacy. Nancy
can have both reading and writing workshops every day! Of course she is
also the principaL of her own school now. IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE TO GO TO
ONE OF HER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS do it. Lots of wonderful new ideas
and resources since her book. And she brings the primary and intermediate
teachers from her school who do their own sessions. They make money for
their school by doing this.

Back to Linda, and I am only roughly remembering, she does reading and
writing workshops by chunks instead of trying to fit them in every week.
So reading for weeks (can't remember but maybe a quarter)...then writing for
a quarter. She also has a quarter in which she does a rich thematic unit
involving both reading and writing. And I remember she did say that yes,
once in awhile her whole class reads a book together! You would need to
read her book to get this explicitly. And she has some especially wonderful
thoughts and examples of assessment!

What I got from this though is that we shouldn't try to do a little bit of
this and that every day or week just to achieve balance. It was better to
think about balance over longer periods of time. This way kids can really
immerse themselves. I'm all for that. Depth and time make all the
difference in the world.

She was editor for Voices from the Middle for a number of years and I read
so many wonderful pieces by her. She is one of my all time favorites!!
Anything by Rief will be wonderful
